Land should be halved to meet demand

Northern Territory housing blocks should be halved in size in order to address a housing shortage, the chairman of the National Housing Supply Council said in a report.

National Housing Supply Council chairman Owen Donald told ntnews.com.au that that smaller blocks was one way to address the Northern Territory's housing shortage.

"We need to see that happening so housing affordability for young people is not impossible," he told ntnews.com.au.

According to a National Housing Supply Council report, cited by ntnews.com.au, NT experienced a housing shortfall of 10,000 last year.

Mr Donald told the publication that Darwin’s small size and reputation as a boom-bust town made developers wary of investing in residential developments. It also needed to diversify the types of houses being built, including detached housing on smaller lots.

“Let people divide their 800sq m lots in half,” he told ntnews.com.au.
