Housing industry needs new policy: report

By webmaster

A new housing industry policy should be developed to respond to the undersupply of housing, according to a leading research group.

The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) report said lengthening dwelling construction times indicate the Coalition of Australian Governments should review the current policies in place.

To ensure residential house building activity meets housing demands, the policy needs to have a focus on the operations of the industry, the AHURI Australian suburban house building: industry organisation, practices and constraints report said.

“This research is based upon the simple proposition that what is produced by the housing industry and how it is produced needs to be considered within the broader consideration of the current and projected under supply of housing,” the report said.

The Housing Industry of Australia forecasts a 466,000 dwelling shortage by 2020.
