Freshwater is a suburb in the Northern Beaches region of New South Wales, located approximately 17 kilometres northeast of Sydney's central business district. The Northern Beaches Council governs it, and it is renowned for its picturesque beach and vibrant community atmosphere.
The area now known as the Garigal and Gayamaygal Aboriginal peoples traditionally utilised Freshwater. Evidence of their habitation remains in rock engravings, open campsites, and rock shelters. European settlement began in the early 19th century, with the first Crown land grant to Thomas Bruin in 1815. The suburb was initially known as Harbord, named in honour of Lady Carrington, née Cecilia Margaret Harbord, wife of the then-Governor of New South Wales. In 2008, the suburb officially reverted to its original name, Freshwater, reflecting the freshwater stream that once ran into the beach.
As of the 2021 census, Freshwater had a population of 9,186 residents. The median age was 36 years. A majority, 67.6%, were born in Australia, with significant communities from England (9.1%), New Zealand (2.2%), the United States (1.7%), Brazil (1.4%), and South Africa (1.2%). English was the predominant language spoken at home, accounting for 84.5% of households.
Freshwater Beach is a stunning, family-friendly beach nestled between two headlands. It offers excellent swimming and surfing conditions. A coastal walk north leads to Curl Curl Beach, which provides scenic views and recreational opportunities.
The Harbord Beach Hotel, established in 1928 and affectionately known to locals as the "Harbord Hilton," is a notable landmark located approximately 200 meters from the beach. The suburb also features the Harbord Diggers, an RSL club that became a modern complex offering dining, entertainment, and fitness facilities.
Freshwater is home to two primary schools: Harbord Public School, established in 1912, catering to students from Kindergarten to Year 6, and St John the Baptist Catholic School. For secondary education, the nearby Freshwater Senior Campus, part of the Northern Beaches Secondary College, serves students in Years 11 and 12.
The suburb offers a relaxed coastal lifestyle, with various local cafes, restaurants, and shops. Residents enjoy access to beautiful coastal walks, snorkelling spots, and bushland areas, contributing to a strong sense of community and an active outdoor lifestyle.
Freshwater combines natural beauty, rich history, and modern amenities, making it a highly desirable suburb within Sydney's Northern Beaches.
