Surburb overview

Rathmines is a residential lakeside suburb in the City of Lake Macquarie, NSW, with postcode 2283, situated on the western shore of Lake Macquarie between Fishing Point, Buttaba and Arcadia Vale.

The suburb is about 32 kilometres south-west of Newcastle’s central business district, with Dorrington Road and surrounding roads providing connections towards Toronto and other western Lake Macquarie communities.

The 2021 Census recorded about 2,000 residents in Rathmines, with detached houses as the predominant type of housing. Residential areas extend inland from the Lake Macquarie shoreline, while substantial areas of public open space occupy the former Rathmines RAAF seaplane base.

Rathmines does not have a railway station; Fassifern Station provides the nearest major passenger rail connection for services to Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney. Bus services connect Rathmines with Toronto and other suburbs on the western side of Lake Macquarie, where passengers can access additional transport services.

Rathmines Public School provides primary education in the suburb, while Toronto High School and other educational facilities serve surrounding communities.

Local shops provide access to some everyday goods and services, while nearby Toronto contains supermarkets, pharmacies, medical practices and a broader range of retail and professional facilities. Additional healthcare and specialist services are available in larger Lake Macquarie and Newcastle centres.

Lake Macquarie forms Rathmines’ eastern boundary and provides opportunities for boating, fishing, kayaking, sailing and other water-based recreation. 

Rathmines Park occupies the site of the former RAAF Station Rathmines, which operated as an important flying-boat base during World War II. The park now contains extensive foreshore open space, playgrounds, sporting facilities, picnic areas and walking routes. 

Several surviving structures and other features within the former base precinct reflect the area’s aviation and military history. The Rathmines Catalina Memorial Park Association maintains links to this history through local heritage activities and displays.

Boat-launching facilities provide recreational access to Lake Macquarie, while neighbouring Fishing Point, Buttaba and Arcadia Vale contain additional foreshore reserves. Local bushland, parks and the Lake Macquarie shoreline provide further opportunities for walking, wildlife observation and informal outdoor recreation.
