Highfields is a residential suburb in the City of Newcastle, NSW, with postcode 2289, situated between Adamstown Heights, Kotara, Charlestown and Kahibah. The suburb is about eight kilometres south-west of Newcastle’s central business district, with nearby arterial roads providing connections towards central Newcastle, Charlestown and the Lake Macquarie area.

Highfields has a relatively small population compared with neighbouring Kotara and Charlestown, with separate houses forming the predominant type of residential accommodation. Residential streets run through elevated, undulating terrain, with bushland and reserves contributing to the suburb’s physical setting.

Highfields does not have a railway station; nearby Kotara and Adamstown stations provide access to passenger services on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line. Bus services operate through Highfields and surrounding suburbs, providing connections towards Newcastle, Charlestown, Kotara and other parts of the metropolitan area.

There are no major schools within Highfields, with primary and secondary education facilities available in neighbouring Adamstown Heights, Kotara, Kahibah and Charlestown.

The suburb has limited retail facilities, with residents generally travelling to Kotara and Charlestown for supermarkets, pharmacies and other everyday goods and services. Westfield Kotara and Charlestown Square offer greater concentrations of supermarkets, department stores, specialty shops, dining facilities, and professional services.

Medical centres, pharmacies, dental practices and allied healthcare providers operate throughout the surrounding suburbs, while John Hunter Hospital at New Lambton Heights provides major emergency and specialist healthcare services.

Highfields lies close to substantial areas of bushland extending towards Glenrock State Conservation Area. Glenrock State Conservation Area contains walking and mountain biking tracks, forest, coastal vegetation and access towards Glenrock Lagoon and the coastline.

The nearby Fernleigh Track provides a shared walking and cycling route along a former railway corridor between Adamstown and Belmont. Blackbutt Reserve at New Lambton provides additional bushwalking tracks, picnic areas, playground facilities and wildlife exhibits.

Dudley and Merewether beaches are accessible by road and provide opportunities for swimming, surfing and other coastal recreation. Parks, sporting grounds and recreation facilities in neighbouring Kotara, Charlestown and Adamstown Heights provide further options for organised and informal activities.
