The suburb is about nine kilometres south-west of Newcastle’s central business district, with the Pacific Highway and Charlestown Road providing connections towards Newcastle, Belmont and other Lake Macquarie centres.

The 2021 Census recorded more than 13,000 residents in Charlestown, making it one of the larger population and service centres in the Lake Macquarie area. Housing includes separate houses, townhouses, units and apartments, with higher-density development concentrated around parts of the commercial centre.

Charlestown does not have a railway station, making buses and private vehicles the main transport options for residents. Charlestown bus interchange is served by routes connecting the suburb with Newcastle, Belmont, Swansea, Kotara, Warners Bay and surrounding communities.

Charlestown Public School provides primary education, while Charlestown East Public School and Whitebridge High School are among the educational facilities in the surrounding area.
