Residential development extends from elevated areas to the coastline, with denser housing and commercial activity found around some major roads and neighbourhood centres.

Merewether does not have a railway station, making buses and private vehicles the primary modes of transport for residents. Bus services connect Merewether with Newcastle’s central business district, The Junction, Charlestown and other parts of the metropolitan area.

Merewether Public School provides primary education within the suburb, while Merewether High School and other government and non-government schools operate in nearby areas.

Local shops, cafes, restaurants and other businesses provide everyday services, while larger retail centres are available at The Junction, Kotara and Charlestown.

Merewether Beach is one of the suburb’s principal recreation areas, used for swimming, surfing, walking, and other coastal activities. Merewether Ocean Baths provides public ocean swimming pools beside the coastline. The suburb forms part of the Newcastle coastline associated with the internationally recognised surfing reserve extending through Merewether and adjoining beaches.

The nearby Glenrock State Conservation Area features bushwalking and mountain biking trails through coastal forest and around Glenrock Lagoon. The Bathers Way coastal walk connects Merewether with beaches and recreation areas further north along Newcastle’s coastline.

Local parks, sporting grounds and coastal reserves provide additional opportunities for organised sport, picnicking and informal outdoor recreation.
