The suburb is about three kilometres west of Newcastle’s central business district, with Maitland Road and nearby arterial roads providing connections to central Newcastle and surrounding suburbs.

The 2021 Census recorded about 2,000 residents in Islington, with housing comprising separate houses, terraces, townhouses, units, and apartments. Residential streets occupy much of the suburb, while commercial premises are concentrated along Maitland Road and former industrial land remains part of the surrounding urban landscape.

Islington does not have an operating railway station, with nearby Hamilton Station and Newcastle Interchange providing access to passenger rail services. Hamilton Station is served by trains towards Newcastle Interchange, the Central Coast and Sydney, while Newcastle Interchange connects with the Newcastle light rail network.

Bus services operate along Maitland Road and surrounding streets, providing connections towards Newcastle’s central business district, Mayfield, Hamilton and other metropolitan areas.

Schools are available in neighbouring Hamilton, Tighes Hill, Mayfield and surrounding suburbs, with additional government and non-government education facilities across inner Newcastle.

The Maitland Road commercial strip contains cafes, restaurants, specialty businesses, and other services, while nearby Hamilton offers supermarkets, pharmacies, and additional shops along Beaumont Street. Larger retail facilities are available at Newcastle West, Mayfield and Waratah.

Nearby Wickham and the Honeysuckle waterfront provide additional harbour-side walking and cycling areas. Newcastle’s beaches, Bathers Way and other coastal recreation areas are accessible by road, bicycle or public transport from Islington.
