The suburb covers an area of approximately 4.0 square kilometres. It has a large hill and red soil, which is common in the area. Several parks with paths, exercise equipment, and playgrounds are all over the sloping residential landscape.

"Tanah Merah" means "red earth" in Malay and is a common name in the Malay-speaking region. The Queensland Place Names Board officially named the suburb in 1971. 

Tanah Merah is bordered by the Pacific Motorway to the northeast, providing residents with direct access to Brisbane to the north and the Gold Coast to the south. The Logan Motorway also skirts the suburb, enhancing connectivity to surrounding regions. 

Tanah Merah offers a suburban lifestyle with access to essential services and amenities. The suburb's parks provide recreational opportunities for residents, and its proximity to significant highways facilitates convenient travel to nearby commercial centres and attractions.
