Parkdale is a bayside suburb in the City of Kingston, about 24 kilometres by road from central Melbourne, with Port Phillip Bay on its western edge and Mentone and Mordialloc as its immediate neighbours.
The 2021 Census recorded 12,308 residents in Parkdale, with a median age of 43, 5,195 private dwellings, an average household size of 2.5 people and a median weekly household income of $2,130.
Census data also shows that 76.0 per cent of residents were born in Australia and 84.7 per cent spoke only English at home, indicating a well-established residential community with a modest mix of overseas-born households.
Public transport is centred on Parkdale Station on the Frankston line, which provides a direct rail connection towards the city and Frankston, while bus route 708 links the area with Hampton, Southland and Carrum, and the 903 SmartBus connects Parkdale with suburbs stretching from Mordialloc through Cheltenham, Moorabbin and beyond.
For daily needs, Parkdale has a local shopping strip that remains a focus of council planning, and residents can also draw on Kingston’s broader network of shopping destinations, including major centres such as Southland and DFO Moorabbin in nearby suburbs.
Community facilities add to the suburb’s everyday function, with Parkdale Library near the station and shops, and the Parkdale Family and Children’s Centre providing council-run early years services.
Larger health services are not concentrated within Parkdale itself, but the Kingston Centre in Heatherton is one of the nearest major public health facilities for the surrounding area.
Recreation is strongly tied to the foreshore, where Parkdale Beach runs for about 1.5 kilometres. It includes a walking path, grassed areas, barbecues, showers, toilets, accessible parking and nearby off-leash areas.
That combination of beach access, rail transport and local village-style services gives Parkdale a practical suburban character shaped as much by day-to-day convenience as by its bayside setting.
