Waterways is a residential suburb in the City of Kingston, about 30 kilometres by road south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, and its layout is defined by lakes, waterways and open space rather than a traditional shopping strip.
The 2021 Census recorded 2,422 residents in Waterways, with a median age of 41, 748 private dwellings, an average household size of 3.3 people and a median weekly household income of $3,013.
The suburb’s households are mostly family-based, with family households making up 92.9 per cent of occupied private dwellings, and separate houses dominate the housing stock.
Waterways also has a relatively diverse population for a small suburb, with 54.4 per cent of residents born in Australia, 53.7 per cent speaking only English at home, and Mandarin and Vietnamese among the more common other languages used at home.
Public transport in Waterways is bus-based rather than rail-based, with route 902 running between Chelsea Railway Station and Airport West Shopping Centre via Springvale Road, and route 709 linking the area with Mordialloc and Noble Park Station via Keysborough South.
For day-to-day errands, residents generally rely on centres outside the suburb, including Aspendale Gardens Village Shopping Centre, which has a supermarket and specialty stores, while larger shopping and service options are in the surrounding parts of Kingston and Greater Dandenong.
Nearby community and support services are also mostly located in adjoining suburbs, including Aspendale Gardens Community Service for local programs and the Kingston Centre in Heatherton, one of the nearest major public health facilities.
Recreation is a strong part of the suburb’s character, with Serpentine Court Reserve providing a lakeside playground, picnic space and waterfront walking and cycling trails, while Yammerbook Nature Reserve and linked trails nearby connect the area with the Edithvale Wetlands and Mordialloc Creek corridor.
