Surburb overview

Guilderton is a picturesque coastal town located at the mouth of the Moore River, approximately 94 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. It falls within the Shire of Gingin and is renowned for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities.

Initially known as Gabbadah, an Aboriginal term meaning "mouthful of water," the area was renamed Guilderton in 1951 after discovering 17th-century Dutch guilder coins near the river's entrance. These coins are believed to be from the wreck of the Dutch ship Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon), which foundered on a reef north of the river mouth near Ledge Point in 1656.

As of the 2021 census, Guilderton had a population of 172 residents, reflecting its status as a small, close-knit community. The town is a popular holiday destination for Perth residents, often called "Moore River."

Guilderton offers a range of recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, canoeing, and boating along the Moore River. Depending on the seasons, the river mouth alternates between a closed lagoon and a tidal estuary, providing diverse aquatic environments. The town's pristine beaches are ideal for relaxation and water sports.

The town has essential amenities, including a general store, café, and caravan park. The Guilderton Lighthouse, established in 1983, is a notable landmark and was the last brick tower-style lighthouse built in Australia.

Guilderton is accessible via Indian Ocean Drive, which provides a scenic route for travellers from Perth and surrounding areas. Public transportation options are limited, so private vehicles are the most practical means of travel to and from the area.

Guilderton's blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and recreational offerings make it a cherished destination for residents and visitors seeking a tranquil coastal retreat.
