The town's name originates from nearby Lancelin Island, named in 1801 by French explorer Captain Nicolas Baudin after P.J. Lancelin, a scientific writer. Initially a holiday camping spot in the 1940s, Lancelin became a hub for the crayfish (lobster) fishing industry. The town was officially gazetted in 1950 and renamed from "Wangaree" to "Lancelin" in 1953.

The protected waters of Lancelin Bay are ideal for swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing, and kite surfing. The area is also known for its excellent fishing opportunities.
Located just offshore, Lancelin Island is a haven for birdlife and offers snorkelling opportunities around its reefs. The coastline between Lancelin and Yanchep is home to 14 shipwrecks, including the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon), which sank in 1656. These wrecks provide sites for experienced divers.
