Movers beware: Consumer Affairs warns of dodgy removalists
Consumer Affairs Victoria has raised the alarm that a Melbourne-based, nationwide servicing removalist damages belongings and then blames the damage on customers.
Nicole Rich, director of Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV), recently issued a public warning against CBD Movers. Operating across the country and out of Melbourne, CBD Movers had 89 complaints lodged against it between January 2022 and June 2023 in Victoria alone, according to CAV.

Ms Rich stated: “I believe that issuing a statutory public warning notice is in the public interest given the high level of recent contacts received by CAV in relation to CBD Movers, and the concerning level of customer detriment evidence in these contacts.”
She went on to detail allegations that CBD Movers had “failed to accept liability to damage they caused to consumers’ belongings, shifting the blame for the damage on to the consumer”.
In addition, she reported that the company had failed to attend jobs on time, been incorrectly charging customers above the hours worked, and had also engaged with consumers in an unprofessional manner.
“Given the number and serious nature of the issues raised, I urge consumers to be cautious when dealing with CBD Movers for their services.”
According to the removalist’s website, CBD Movers aims to “become the most customer-trusted moving company in Australia”.
CBD Movers has not commented on the public warning, but its website also states that company chairman Deepak Mandy “follows an overriding philosophy of putting customers at the heart of everything he does” and that “customers and their possessions are paramount” to him.
