What suburb is Australia’s most coveted?

When it comes to where Australians want to live the most, no Australian suburb appears more wanted than the premiere Sydney harbourside suburb of Mosman.

With boundaries extending from the Spit Bridge in the north to Taronga Zoo in the south, and with harbour views almost unrivalled anywhere in the city, Mosman is Australia’s most sought-after suburb for prospective buyers, according to property expert InfoTrack.

Between January and July this year, no other Australian suburb had as many suburb reports ordered on the InfoTrackGO site than Mosman. Long marked as one of the country’s most desirable suburbs, the business believes Mosman’s appeal lies in its proximity to bustling North Sydney as well as the NSW capital’s central business district and a number of pristine beaches, including Balmoral Beach, which lies within its borders.

Mosman’s stature as one of the nation’s most wanted suburbs among prospective buyers is no secret. Earlier this year, data from PropTrack revealed the suburb recorded the highest total sales value of any Australia metropolitan area across 2022, with $1.65 billion worth of property changing hands in Mosman last calendar year.

Data from PropTrack also indicates the suburb’s median home value is currently sitting around $5.1 million, despite a 1.9 per cent decrease in the last 12 months.

The suburb beat a host of other NSW regions, including Surry Hills and Paddington, to secure its top spot. According to InfoTrack, the 10 suburbs searched the most on their site between January and July are:

  1. Mosman, NSW
  2. Castle Hill, NSW
  3. Baulkham Hills, NSW
  4. Surry Hills, NSW
  5. Austral, NSW
  6. Eastwood, NSW
  7. Ryde, NSW
  8. Parramatta, NSW
  9. Paddington, NSW
  10. Bulimba, Qld

Sandra Falzon, spokesperson for InfoTrackGO, said the data indicates: “New South Wales continues to be a hot property market with Sydney suburbs taking out the top nine spots of more than 60 suburbs regularly searched on InfoTrackGO this year.”

Interestingly, the only suburb outside of NSW to be featured on the list of Australia’s most desirable suburbs isn’t one of the premium markets in Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne, such as Brighton, but rather the Brisbane riverside suburb of Bulimba.

Bulimba is one of the Queensland capital’s premiere suburbs and broke the $2 million bracket in August last year. According to more recent data from PropTrack, the suburb’s median house price has dipped to $1.9 million.
