Heritage property fines increased
Developers and renovators that deface or demolish heritage listed properties in Western Australia can now expect a hefty fine.
Last week, Heritage Minister John Castrilli said amendments were being made to the state’s Heritage Act to help protect WA’s 1,300 properties listed in the State Register of Heritage Places.
“Current penalties for illegal works on heritage-listed places are extremely low and offer little deterrence to deliberate destruction,” Mr Castrilli said.
“With this new legislation the state government is making it clear it values the retention and conservation of our heritage buildings.”
Those found to have damaged or despoiled a state-registered place without a valid approval can expect to face a monetary penalty of up to $1 million and $50,000 daily penalty for continuing offences.
In addition, any offenders found guilty may also face a restoration order.
