500,000 metro apartments needed, Syd
All vacant sites in Sydney near public transport should be developed to house an increasingly growing population, according to the Urban Taskforce.
An extra 500,000 apartments for infill sites in metropolitan Sydney over the next 25 years is an absolute necessary to house an increase in people, said Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson.
“Every site of a reasonable size if located near public transport nodes must be developed to its capacity if we are going to manage population growth,” Mr Johnson said.
The government is integral in pursuing these opportunities, particularly near railway, he said.
“This is particularly so if the government owns the land and it is not being used to its capacity.”
“We have many members who have been battling local councils for years to get reasonable developments approved for urban infill sites,” he said.
“The government should set up a Redevelopment Taskforce or a Renewal Authority to help private sector sites achieve planning approval as well as helping with their own sites.”
Recently, the Urban Taskforce welcomed the Minister for Finance and Services Greg Pearce announcement of a potential urban renewal of government land in Macquarie Park.
