Investors who have a positive working relationship with their tradespeople are likely to get better results, according to Cherie Barber from Renovating For Profit.

“The better you can treat a tradesperson, the more they'll look after you,” Ms Barber said.

In her experience, being on friendly terms with a client motivates tradespeople to work to a higher standard.

“If a tradesperson hates you, they're going to do bad work for you or they're going to want to get out of the job as quickly as possible,” she said.

“If they like you, they're more willing to do a good job and won't rip you off.”

In particular, Ms Barber said relationships would quickly sour if workers were not paid promptly.

“The number one bain of tradespeople is not being paid on time,” she said.

“It's not fair if someone does a job for you and then they have to wait a month to get paid.”

However, she also encouraged novice renovators to vet their tradespeople carefully.

“Make sure you always get three quotes for everything,” she said.

“Always make sure you go and check out their last job or speak to the owner of their last job yourself.”
