Stage 4 restrictions stretch HomeBuilder time frame
Victorians hoping to take up the federal HomeBuilder scheme will now have more time to do so, with the construction commencement time frame being extended to six months in response to the state’s health crisis.
The announcement was made by the federal Minister for Housing and Assistant Treasurer, Michael Sukkar, who flagged the “unique COVID-19 restrictions throughout the state”.
To be eligible for HomeBuilder, construction is supposed to commence within three months of the eligible building contract being signed.
However, HomeBuilder’s design did allow states and territories to extend this time frame by up to three months where commencement is delayed due to unforeseen factors outside the control of the parties to the contract.
“Given the unique lockdown affecting Melbourne, as well as restrictions throughout regional Victoria, the decision to extend the commencement time frame made by the Victorian commissioner of state revenue provides certainty and confidence to applicants and builders alike,” he expressed.
The minister called the construction industry “key to our nation’s economic success”.
