Australian property owners who skip summer maintenance and leave their homes unsecured could watch their next deposit fly away in expensive repairs and sky-high insurance claims.

According to the new Summer Risk Report, Allianz found that 42 per cent of households had not even begun to prepare for the typical seasonal hazards that accompany the end-of-year weather, such as increased fire risk.

Allianz found that almost one in five home owners invest no time or money in maintaining their property, while nearly a quarter said they could not afford to spend more.

The report also found that 42 per cent believe their home was already safe enough, while 22 per cent of home owners said they feel unprepared if an accident or mishap were to occur.

As barbecue (BBQ) appliance usage skyrockets in the summer months, data showed that only a quarter of Australians check for risks and faults before firing up the outdoor cooking device.

Allianz said that the cost of outdoor BBQ-related insurance claims can sometimes amount to tens of thousands of dollars.

Founder of Ace Property Agency, Rebecca Cardamone, said that owners should ensure they check items such as BBQs, smoke alarms and air conditioners before they become too busy.

“The key to ensuring you’re keeping up to date with home maintenance is to create a regular schedule,” Cardamone said.

“These checks will then become part of your regular routine – allowing you to enjoy the holiday season without worry or concern.”

The report also found homes face a higher risk in summer, with 40 per cent of Australians travelling over the festive season and insurance claims surging to $1.62 million last year over the two-week holiday period.

According to the report, nearly half of home owners actively take steps to ensure their homes are secured adequately before travelling, while 41 per cent have someone check in on their property while they are away.

Allianz Australia chief claims officer Luke Whenman said that home owners can take simple precautions to better protect their homes over the holiday season, such as securing outdoor items and ensuring all doors and windows are properly locked when going away.

“Our homes are a hub of celebration and relaxation during summer, but they’re also vulnerable when left unprotected,” Whenman said.

“These small steps can make a big difference in ensuring your home is well-maintained, and you are able to enjoy the holiday season over the summer,” he concluded.
