Builder on the run: Speeding ticket exposes dodgy work
A dodgy builder has been convicted and fined more than $77,000 for offences including working unregistered and without a permit.
In June 2025, Jared Milic was pulled over for speeding by Victoria Police near Portland, leading to the execution of an eight-year-old arrest warrant.
The Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) successfully prosecuted the 44-year-old for six offences carried out for a Geelong home owner at two sites.
The offences included working while unregistered and without a building permit, not having the required insurance, therefore entering into an illegal contract.
The BPC said Milic breached his bail conditions multiple times by failing to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court for the hearing, which proceeded without him.
The court heard Milic had entered into a contract with a home owner to partially demolish and remove a property in Brunswick, before relocating it to a site in North Geelong.
However, Milic had not obtained a permit for either site.
“When the home owner realised Milic was unregistered, uninsured, and there were no building permits in place, he terminated the agreement,” the BPC said.
“He then took the matter to VCAT, which ordered Milic to pay more than $26,000 in damages. To date, the home owner is yet to receive any money.”
During sentencing, Magistrate Brett Sonnet said the offending, involving premeditated planning and a significant abuse of trust, was “grave in nature”.
He also said that the home owner had copped substantial financial loss as a result of Milic’s actions.
The BPC said demolitions always required a permit and had specific requirements to ensure community safety, while also encouraging home owners to hire a registered builder.
