NSW government mandates training for strata committee members

NSW strata committee members will now have to complete mandatory training to build their knowledge, capability, and confidence on matters affecting home owners.
The NSW government has launched new mandatory training for strata committee members to help them build the skills to make significant decisions impacting homeowners.
From 1 October, new and returning strata committee members will be required to complete free online training delivered by NSW Fair Trading within three months of their appointment.
If a member does not complete their training on time, NSW Fair Trading will remove them from the committee.
The requirement was designed to ensure members can understand and confidently navigate responsibilities such as hiring repairers, arranging insurance, approving renovation applications, or managing disputes between owners.
The online course, called Introduction to Strata Committee Rights and Responsibilities, is self-paced and takes around one hour to complete.
Key topics include committee member duties, repairs and maintenance, financial management, meetings, record-keeping and dispute resolution.
This course is the first in a planned series of free training modules to be delivered through the government’s digital platform, Strata Hub, with further courses to be rolled out from 2027.
The training was developed by NSW Fair Trading in consultation with strata owners and key strata stakeholders, including the Owners Corporation Network (OCN) and Strata Community Association NSW (SCA NSW).
It followed a 30 per cent increase in applications to NSW’s mediation service for strata disputes during the last financial year, with repairs and maintenance as the largest source of issues.
Acting Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Paul Scully, said that with more than 1.2 million people living in apartments across NSW, the training will support better decision-making and give residents greater confidence.
“This is exactly the kind of work the Minns Labor Government envisioned when we established the Strata and Property Taskforce with an $8.4 million investment – delivering stronger protections, better governance and improved outcomes for residents,” Scully said.
Owners Corporation Network of Australia Ltd’s managing director, operations, David Glover, said most strata committee members were volunteers who gave their time to support communities.

“This training will provide practical guidance and build confidence, helping committee members better understand their responsibilities and make informed decisions on behalf of owners and residents,” he said.
“Well-informed committees are essential to creating stronger, more harmonious and better-managed strata communities.”
