‘You couldn’t have cooked up a worse set of tax policies’: Andrew Bragg’s housing plan for a Coalition government
Shadow housing minister Andrew Bragg says the budget has delivered fewer homes, higher rents, and fewer first home buyers, and tells Phil Tarrant what the Coalition would do if it wins office.
On this episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, Phil Tarrant is joined by Senator Andrew Bragg, the Liberal Party’s shadow minister for housing, to examine what has changed for investors, renters, and first home buyers since the federal budget.
Bragg argues the government’s new tax measures have made conditions worse, pointing to what he says is a fall in home loans, rising rents, and a decline in annual housing supply over its time in office. The pair also discuss the pressures on builders, from migration-driven demand to construction costs, red tape in the National Construction Code and industry insolvencies.
Bragg then outlines the Coalition’s plan, including repealing the new taxes, cutting the building code, and making it easier to build granny flats, while acknowledging that getting repeals through the Senate would be a challenge.
The pair also grapple with using super as a mortgage offset, the growth of “retired renters”, and a Coalition policy of aligning migration with housing availability, with the next federal election less than two years away.
