NSW’s new strata and property services commissioner announced
Angus Abadee will formally step into the NSW strata and property services commissioner role, after having served as interim commissioner since December of last year.
NSW Fair Trading appointed Abadee as the state’s new strata and property services commissioner, taking over from John Minns, who resigned in December of last year.
The new commissioner will lead NSW Fair Trading’s oversight of the strata and property sector, focusing on raising performance and accountability standards in strata, property services, retirement villages, and residential land lease communities across NSW.
Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Anoulack Chanthivong, said Abadee would help to lift standards across the state’s strata and property services sector.
“Mr Abadee’s appointment underscores the NSW government’s commitment to fostering a fair, transparent, and sustainable strata and property sector,” Chanthivong said.
Abadee brings extensive regulatory and sector experience from his time as interim strata and property services commissioner since the position was vacated last year, alongside insights from previous senior positions in NSW Fair Trading, Building Commission NSW, and Liquor & Gaming NSW.
Stepping into his new role, Abadee said he was “absolutely thrilled” at the appointment, and shared his aim to improve conditions across the board in the state’s strata and property services sector.
“We have an opportunity to drive proactive and visible regulation across the industry, focusing on improving agent behaviour, cracking down on individuals and agencies, and empowering consumers,” Abadee said.
During his provisional term, Abadee established and led the strata and property taskforce’s investigations into malpractice in the strata sector, such as underquoting by sales agents and strata agents who have failed to act in the best interests of owners’ corporations and meet disclosure obligations.
Earlier this month (May 2025), an investigation by the taskforce unearthed evidence of repeat misconduct by Result Strata Management Pty Ltd and its general manager, Michael Lee, which resulted in Lee and the company being permanently disqualified from working in the NSW strata sector.
As the state’s new permanent strata and property services commissioner, Abadee emphasised that he would look to crack down further on misconduct in the state’s strata sector.
“Along with the Fair Trading team, I want to ensure that practitioners do not just see themselves as running a business – they recognise they are members of a profession that comes with benefits and obligations,” Abadee concluded.
