Why agents with long names can get you a better deal

When it comes time to selling, picking an agent with a longer name could sell your property for more, according to a new report.

The Agent Name Report by ranking website RateMyAgent has analysed the names of over 36,000 agents from data in 2018 to identify the trends of high-performing agents and how they relate to their first names.

Investors looking for an agent likely to sell a property should look for agents named Lucas, as they were found to likely sell the most amount of properties due to being tracked the highest for number of property sales.

Agents who were likely to achieve an average of over $1 million on their sales price were named Alexander, which in fact also correlated with the discovery that the longer an agent’s name is, the higher the average price of the properties they managed to sell, with each extra letter adding an estimated $32,620 to the end price.

This also accounts for longer and shorter variations of names. For example, when comparing Alexander and Alex, 88 per cent of the time, the longer name achieved a better sale.

However, those looking to find an agent to exceed their expectations should find themselves an agent named Cheryl, as these agents exceeded expectations 61.5 per cent of the time, compared to the average of 33.1 per cent.

For the most part, longer names had no impact on the happiness of the vendor, with the exceptions of two-letter names performing well under the average, and 11-letter names performing well above the average.

“What’s in a name? Well, if William Shakespeare were here, he would most likely say not Romeo and Juliet, who don’t even make the list,” said Mark Armstrong, RateMyAgent CEO and co-founder.

Agents are most likely to be named Michael and Michelle, as they topped the list for most popular male and female name, respectively, and are least likely to be named Maureen, being listed in the number one spot on the “endangered species” list.
