The costly niche trades causing investors to tread carefully
After analysing 52,000 quotes, Service Seeking has release the most expensive niche trades that have seen prices driven up severely because of a lack of demand.
According to Service Seeking CEO Jeremy Levitt, these trades will remain pricey for a while for the foreseeable future.
“The few tradies that do work in these industries are never short of work and charge premium prices as customers grow desperate to get them done,” Mr Levitt said.
The top 10 most expensive niche trades from financial year 2016-17 are:
| Trade | Average cost per job |
| Stonework and masonry | $3,438 |
| Staircases | $2,400 |
| Cabinetmaking | $1,576 |
| Insulation installation | $1,416 |
| Carpet laying and installation | $1,199 |
| Garages, sheds and carports | $643 |
| Glass installation | $560 |
| Bathtub resurfacing | $500 |
| Tinting and films | $360 |
| Fridge repair | $146 |
The reasoning behind these trades being so costly are also due to apprenticeships being at their lowest levels since 2004, according to claims by Service Seeking analysing data collected by the Victoria University research body Mitchell Institute.
