Regional communities set for big funding boost

The Morrison government promised three regional areas will see a boost in government spending, which if enacted, is expected to be a boon to these economies. Where are they and how much are they getting?

Modelled off the government’s City Deal investment program, three regional areas are set to benefit from Regional Deals, as confirmed in Tuesday night’s bulletin.

The three areas to attract spending are the Albury and Wodonga areas, the Barkly area, and the Hinkler area.

The breakdown on spending for the three areas, according to the Budget papers, are:

Albury and Wodonga

The Regional Deal, previously announced on 20 March, will see $3.2 million spent over 2019-20 in order to boost the area’s economy and social development.

The first Regional Deal to go over a boarder, the Budget states that the spending will “undertake strategic governance, planning and inform structure and priorities for the regional deal”.

Barkly

Barkly is expected to see $45.4 million over 2019-20 to enhance the region’s economic and social development.

The $45.4 million will be spent on:

  • $15.4 million for a new weather radar near Tennant Creek; and
  • $7.6 million for community infrastructure projects previously funded through the Building Better Regions Fund.

This spending is also planned to be redirected partially from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.

Hinkler

Hinkler is expected to see $71 million over 2019-20 in order to better community and transport projects in order to improve economic and social developments across Bundaberg and Herbey Bay.
